The Southern Sky Column (Qiankun Zhu) in Yuanjiajie
The landscape you have seen before

Genshin didn't invent Qingyun Peak. It borrowed these pillars.

In Genshin Impact, the floating islands of Qingyun Peak, the misty cliffs of Jueyun Karst, and the gateways of Tianheng Mountain were painted after the sandstone pillars of Wulingyuan. Chinese state media confirmed the link in 2023; miHoYo ran a co-branded Zhangjiajie event back in 2020.

The same valley holds the Southern Sky Column (Qiankun Zhu, 1,074 m), renamed Hallelujah Mountain after Avatar. One landscape, two of fantasy's most recognisable worlds.

This isn't a lookalike. It's the source.

Wulingyuan has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.

In September 2020 the city of Zhangjiajie and miHoYo signed an official partnership and placed Genshin teleport-waypoint markers inside the national forest park. Liyue place names are fictional; the real landscape references are to Wulingyuan, not Tianmen Mountain.

Official reference prices

Know before you go

These are the official rates. Compare any quote you receive against this list — we confirm the current price in writing before you pay anything.

Wulingyuan is not Tianmen Mountain. They are separate scenic areas with separate tickets. Wulingyuan covers Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and Tianzi Mountain; Tianmen Mountain is a separate mountain above Zhangjiajie city. The Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is a third, separate attraction.

Traveller sentiment

What travellers tend to say

Worth the trip.
The verdict repeated across English-language travel forums.
A fairytale landscape.
One of the most common descriptions in reviews and travel blogs.
Golden Whip Stream was a highlight.
Frequently singled out by families and slower walkers for its flat, shaded path.
It felt like walking through Liyue.
A common reaction from Genshin players posting side-by-side photos of Qingyun Peak and Yuanjiajie.

The honest downsides

Travellers also report: long queues in peak season (2–3 hours at the Bailong Elevator), weather roulette (the "cloud sea" is sometimes just fog), around 20,000 steps a day, and aggressive sales tactics at some shopping-heavy tours. We design around all four — early entry, buffer days, low-intensity alternatives, and strictly no shopping stops.

  • Stairs don't scare you — or you'd happily take the flat valley walk instead
  • You want photos with nobody else in them
  • You saw Avatar, or climbed Jueyun Karst, and thought "I want to stand there"
  • You'd rather pay one fair price than haggle at five shops

Traveller questions

The eight things everyone asks

Do I really not need a visa?

Citizens of 50 countries — including the Republic of Korea, Japan, Germany, France, the UK, Canada and Australia — currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days. The policy runs through Dec 31, 2026; no extension has been announced yet. Organised group tours and individual travel are included. Send us your passport country and we confirm eligibility for your dates. The US is not on this list; US passport holders may qualify for 240-hour visa-free transit.

Can I pay with a foreign card?

Most scenic-area ticket windows now accept UnionPay, Visa and Mastercard at the main entrances. We still recommend carrying some cash for small vendors and mountain-top stalls. The planning pack covers the foreign-card setup (WeChat Pay / Alipay linked card) in detail.

Is it very crowded in winter?

Almost empty compared with summer. The 2–3 hour queues at the Bailong Elevator you read about online are a July–August phenomenon. From December through February, early-morning entry means you may have major viewpoints to yourself.

How fit do I need to be?

Plan for around 15,000–20,000 steps on full days. There are cable cars, the Bailong Elevator (a 326 m outdoor glass lift) and shuttle buses that cut the hardest climbing in half. Golden Whip Stream is flat and shaded — families and older walkers love it. Tell us your fitness level and we build the day around it.

What if the weather is foggy?

Cloud sea is weather-dependent. Winter is actually the best season for it — temperature inversions form clouds below the peaks. We build a buffer day into multi-day trips so you get at least one clear sunrise, and we flip the itinerary based on the morning forecast.

Will I be pushed into shopping stops?

No. Our licensed partner's contract explicitly excludes shopping stops, and the quote you receive is itemised — no hidden commissions. If a guide adds a stop during the trip, we refund that day's guide fee on the spot.

Is it actually the Avatar mountains?

Yes. The Southern Sky Column (Qiankun Zhu) in Yuanjiajie was renamed "Hallelujah Mountain" in 2010 as the Avatar connection grew. Visit the viewpoints above Yuanjiajie that made the landscape famous; it is also one of the visual references for Genshin Impact's Liyue — in 2020 Zhangjiajie and miHoYo signed an official partnership and set up Genshin waypoint markers in the park for a limited campaign.

Can I do it on my own, without a guide?

Yes — main trails, shuttle routes and major viewpoints have English signage, and the shuttle + cable-car loop is easy to follow. Most independent travellers manage 2–3 days without a guide. A guide is worth it for the sunrise photo route, the Genshin waypoint trail, or help at ticket windows and restaurants.
